ACHIEVEMENTS OF TENANTS GROUPS

Tenants & Residents Groups make HUGE differences to local areas

Tenants and Residents Associations in North Lanarkshire have a long established track record of successfully improving their communities and developing services. This page provides just a few of the hundreds of examples that volunteers have had in North Lanarkshire.

Morningside Residents Association

The Morningside Association has just fought and won a landmark campaign showing that when people stand together they can make a difference. They stood against an application to alter planning concent to increase traffic movement of coal lorries entering the morningside railhead from 60 to 224 daily. The Goverment Reporter in the appeal found in favour of the refusal held up by the Council Planning Department and the objection of the peolpe. Working together as a group in unification works this is proof of that. 

Chapelhall Tenants & Residents Association

Were awarded £10,000 to benefit the local community. The Chapelhall group recently won the Federation's award for their Outstanding Contribution to the bigger picture in North Lanarkshire, and their support for the North Lanarkshire Federation. Before this they also were awarded a certificate of achievement in recognition of Addressing the needs of the local community and promoting community engagement in the pursuit of Play Facilities. They have also brought back to the village celebrations including a christmas tree during the festive season.

Central Coatbridge Tenants & Residents Association

A newly formed group has already significantly contributed to developing the tenants movement in North Lanarkshire. In recognition of this they were awarded the NLF Outstanding Achievement Award

DMM2 Coltness, Wishaw

Another new group has already made environmental improvements in their area including developing a carpark and school walkway

Craigneuk & Old Petersburn Road, Airdrie

The group has successfully been providing leisure activities for the youth during the summer. They have also recently started a local newsletter for the area, got local CCTV installed in key areas of the community, started a football project for the youth and are now starting an allotment project for their neighbourhood.

Condorrat Tenants & Residents Association

This group has focused on opening a drop in centre for the people of Condorrat. The Centre is open three days a week.

Rawyards Tenants and Residents Assocaition, Airdrie

This group has been very busy providing a whole range of activities for young people in the area. This incldues setting up a fishing group, a football group, a junior arts & crafts group, a girls social group, a boys social group, trips to the pantomine and various festive celebrations. All of this has led to the development of a youth committee.

The Rawyards Group has recently been awareded £11,000 from cash back for communities to support their group work.

Harthill & Eastfield Tenants & Residents Group

The group have been successful in getting funding into the area. They recently got £5k for computers & training for the group. The group are also very active developing tenant participation across North Lanarkshire. They recently got awarded the Federation's Commendable Contribution Award recognising how they have helped the tenants movement in North Lanarkshire.

Alcath Tenants and Residents Group, Wishaw & Shotts

 1) For years the area has been without play areas so the Association fought for a set of goal posts on a piece of land that was not being used to stop the children being put in a dangerous position by playing football on the roads this has been succesfully achieved.

2) On the same piece of land the Association have been fighiting for lights to be put in the lane running through the Abernethyn lane to prevent youths hanging around the area, plus makiing the area safer for the general public this again has been achieved. An Update the work on this area has now started and is looking fantastic, showing a major improvment to the area, this is only the start of things to come we hope more improvments wil be looked at in the future.

Carnbroe tenants Group, Coatbridge 

Bus Stop area re-generated, upgrading of street lighting, areas cleaned up, better policies (at times)

 Braedale Tenants and residents Association, Wishaw & Shotts

 Clean up area, Bus shelter re-installed, dog waste bins installed, lights at lane re-installed, re-surfacing road

Allershaw Tower, Wishaw & Shotts

Preventing Social Isolation in Tower, Involving tenants in a range of social and learning opportunities, Receiving grants from council and Lottery

Lodge Tower, Motherwell

Environmental improvements, Community Spirit, Walkabouts

Woodside Tower, Motherwell

Now being listened to re: tower cleanliness and surrounding area

Angus Avenue & Cumbrae Crescent, Motherwell

Social Events for children and Adults, Working with police and local councillor

Glassford Tower, Motherwell

Meetings with Housing Dept. Formed close relationship with other tenant groups

Reduction in Council Tax bands due to pressure. Petersburn Parklands. Getting new Lighting & Paths

Craigneuk & Old Petersburn, Airdrie

Central Heating. Road calming. Estate Walkabouts. Park lands. Shut off lanes. Better quality housing (& health) for residents

Salsburgh, Airdrie

Improvements in Housing. Better consultation. Better information regarding scatter flats. Improvements to parks and garden areas
